Ripley's Recipes

Ripley's Favorite Treat Recipes:

We all love to eat here at Red Rover, and we love sharing treats and recipes with our friends! Here are some of my favorite treats...easy to make, easy to eat! ~Ripley

Rip's Oatmeal Squares
(soft training treats)

1 jar (4 oz) any flavor baby food*
1 c. quick cooking oatmeal
1/2 c. flour
4 oz. water or soymilk (use the baby food jar to measure...that's what I do!)
1 egg
Spices as needed

Mix all ingredients in a bowl. Spread the "paste" on a greased microwave-safe dinner plate. Microwave for 3 minutes on high, flip the treat over and microwave for another 1 or 2 minutes. Let cool, and use a pizza cutter to cut into tiny bite-sized pieces. Freezes well.

*Some variations my dogs enjoy: Apples and Chicken baby food with cinnamon mixed into the batter; Vanilla Custard baby food with nutmeg and ginger mixed into the batter; Chicken and Rice baby food with garlic powder sprinkled on top...the list is endless! I use sweet baby foods, as well as savory...fun to experiment with!

Liver Bits (soft training treats)

1 lb. chicken liver
1/3 cup molasses
1 box graham cracker crumbs
Pinch of cinnamon

Puree liver in food processor. Add other ingredients and mix to a cake batter consistency. Pour into microwave safe square bowl and nuke for 10 minutes. Cool, cut and put into a 350 degree oven for 15-20 minutes until firm to the touch. Cool and freeze. A great variation on typical "liver bait".

Fish Fudge (soft training treats)

2 - 6oz cans of tuna (do NOT drain)
1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1 Tbsp. garlic powder or granulated garlic
2 eggs, lightly beaten
grated parmesan cheese, about 1 handful

Mix all together in a mixer or food processor. I chop up the moist ingredients first in a "chopper", then mix it into a bowl with the flour. Grease a 9x9 pan (I use spray canola oil), bake in a 350 degree oven for 20 minutes.

The texture is sort of fudge/putty-like. Keep them in the freezer as they freeze very well. They can be kept in the refrigerator for 3 days. I cut them into very small squares while they are still hot. I toss them into a freezer bag and leave them in the freezer until needed. Only take out the amount you require.

Roo's P.B. Crunchers

2 cups whole-wheat flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 cup natural peanut butter
1 cup skim milk

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
In a bowl, combine flour and baking powder.
In another bowl, mix peanut butter and milk.
Add wet mixture to dry, and mix well.
Turn out dough on a lightly floured surface and knead. Roll out to 1/4-inch thick and cut out shapes.
Place on a greased baking sheet and bake 20 minutes or until lightly brown. Cool on a rack then store in an airtight container.
Makes 30 large bones

Pretty Inna's Sweet Treats

1/2 Milk
1 Teaspoon Cinnamon
1 1/2 cup Wheat Flour
1 cup Quick Oats
2 tablespoon veg. Oil
2 Tablespoon Honey
2 Tablespoon Molasses
1/2 Teaspoon Nutmeg

Preheat oven 350. Mix all ingredients together in large bowl-except the wheat flour. Add wheat flour to mixture 1/2 cup at a time. Dough should stick together but not to your hands. If still sticky add flour a handful at a time. Place dough on flat, floured surface and roll out to 1/3 inch thickness. Cut dough with Cookie Cutters. Inara prefers hearts and other pretty things.Place treats on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 40 minutes. Cookies will slide off cookie sheet when done. Let treats cool. Store in an airtight container.

Homemade Frosty Paws

32 oz. plain yogurt
1 mashed banana
2 T p'nut butter
2 T honey

It’s true dairy products aren’t good for dogs, but yogurt contains much less lactase than regular milk and the live cultures are great for your dog’s digestive system. This recipe is delicious and good for your pet!

Mix all these ingredients in your blender, then dump into ice cube trays, paper cups, or even a kong toy to freeze and serve.

Doggy Birthday Cake

Banana Carob Chip Cake

2 cups water
4 oz. baby food (any flavor...I make meaty ones for some dogs, and fruity ones for others)
1/8 tsp vanilla
3 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 Tbs baking powder
1 egg
2 Tbs honey

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C)

In a mixing bowl combine water, baby food, vanilla, egg and honey. Add whole wheat flour and baking powder. Mix well. Pour mixture into an 8-inch cake pan sprayed with a nonstick spray. Bake for 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
